Yesterday we went to the western Community Hospital. We were surprised, because it is completly diffrent to the Queen Alexander Hospital in Portsmouth. Most of the rooms are singelbedrooms and a few 2-, 3- or 4-bedrooms. They have a garden were thepatients can sit. It is more like a carehome, were the patients can have their therapies.
Later Sheila Brook told us more about the Primary Care Trust, how it works and which services the Trust proviedes.
At the afternoon we had self-directed work and went on with our Projekt.

Salisbury, Stonehenge and a big garden
Yesterday, we went out for a lot of traveling. We started early in the morning at 8.45. We took the bus to Salisbury and had a tour through the city. It was very nice because Salisbury is a very beautiful city. We stayed there till 12.30. Than we left for our visit at a National Trust Property. On our way there we passed Stonehenge. Pity we couldn't stop.
Stourhead belongs to the national trust. It is a big Property with a big garden, a lake and some houses. Our stay began with a lecture about Stourhead and the National Trust, then we went in the garden and the most of us made a tour around the lake. At 4 o'clock we drove back to Southampton
After a short phase of relaxing we all went out to the royal oak, a pub next to Kimber Halls of Residence. It was a big event for us because Jo and Carola sang Karaoke. We had a lot of fun and a very nice evening

Isle of Wight - without us
On Sunday most of uor colleagues went to the Isle of Wight. Our group did not go on this trip (money, illness,...), so we continued working on our project. We discussed how the final paper and the presentation should like. Surprisingly we could agree on most of the points quite fast and no real conflict came up. We are now at the stage of writing the essay and hopefully this will be finished till tuesday because afterwards we want to concentrate on the presentation we have to give at friday.

Trip to edinburgh
At the macmillan cancer center huge amount of information about the support and benefits this charity offers to the people requiring help. We then tried to sort out information we could use for our project.
Franziska and Michael carried out this work from home. To make sure that I will not be disturbed, I decided to get into a train and went to Edinburgh. Besides working I also visited this amazing city. On the way home I stopped for a short walk in Glasgow and Birmingham. It has been a long day but I took a lot of impressions of England and Scotland home with me.
Trip to Portsmouth
Queen Alexandra Hospital
Today our class had the possibility to visit a typical english hospital in the city of Portsmouth. As we arrived there, we were a bit surprised about the condition of this huge building. In opposite to an austrian hospital, it looked like a huge field.
Before we started to enter the hospital we were devided into 3 groups and guided by 3 very nice "hospital educaters and developers" as they were called.
We entered the building at the back of the hospital which was the former access during the second world war. Two words : Old and shady!
But as we moved on, the conditions got better and better. We inspected 4 different wards on 4 floors. The technical and hygenical standards were quite the same as in austria but there was one big difference. The ammount of patients in one room was between 8 - 18(in the dialysis). As i asked our guide if that's normal, he answered :"Yes, and the patients seem to be content with this conditions" And in fact, they are.
The tour through the hospital took us about 1 hour. Then we hade to move on to our next station:
The Mcmillan Cancer Center
The projekt of our group is all about that topic. So we were quite excited to see and to listen what it's about.
The Cancer Center is located in a hospital 20 minutes away from Queen Alex. Hosp. It's a charity company which means that it's funded by donations. In the UK there are about 100 centers. The Mcmillan Cancer Center is one of the top 10 charities.
The presentation was really interesting and touched us on an emotional level. We realized that they do their job because they are really convicted about what they are doing. One word: Corporate Identity!

CIS
Today we went to the organisation CIS(Chrildren Information Service). There we got a lot of information how childcare in southampton works and which possiblities the parents have to get the best care for their Child.

At the beginning let me introduce our group, Hannes, Michael and me(Franziska). We are students of the MCI. In the moment we are studing in southampton at the solent university for two weeks, to improve our english and to get a better knowledge of the Healthsystem in the UK.
